- CALENDAR--Julius Caesar: 45 B.C.
-
- Julius Caesar heeds the advice of Greek astronomer
- Sosigenes and adopts the solar calendar (or Julian
- calendar) as the official calendar of Rome. This
- calendar year is 365 days long with a leap year
- (extra day) every 4 years. The Julian calendar
- established the days of the week and the order of
- the months as they exist in today's calendar. In 44
- B.C., Caesar decided to rename the month Quintillis
- to Julius (July), to honor himself. The month
- Sextillis was later renamed Augustus (August) in
- honor of Augustus Caesar, Julius Caesar's successor.
